Today I have added a new section to the web site titled “My Bills”. This section is reserved for bills that I have drafted that could be introduced by current seat holders in Congress or Senate. Whether or not they are introduced by others is up to them. However, when elected, I will be introducing each of these pieces of legislation to the Senate.
The first bill I have drafted is likely my most controversial stance – to repeal the USA PATRIOT Act and abolish the Department of Homeland Security. I submit that the USA PATRIOT Act is not only unconstitutional, but has not made us any “safer” from terrorist threats. Like any other over-reaching powergrab by the government, it has been abused time and time again allowing law enforcement to spy on U.S. citizens. It has also allowed corporations to abuse power granted to them by the Federal government – even after a whistleblower turned in AT&T, the government granted AT&T retroactive immunity from breaking the law.
The Department of Homeland Security was created shortly after the 9/11 attack to help fix the perceived “miscommunication” amongst several government agencies. It was the thought of the Federal government that if the miscommunication wasn’t there, the attacks could have been prevented. So in order to solve that issue, they were given an annual budget of $52.0 billion, 216,000 employees, and complete oversight of the following government agencies: United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Federal Emergency Management Agency, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Transportation Security Administration, United States Coast Guard, National Protection and Programs Directorate, United States Secret Service. All of which have had massive failures under the Department of Homeland Security.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services? Arizona certainly doesn’t believe this department is doing very well.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection? Again, Arizona doesn’t have much faith in this department.
Federal Emergency Management Agency? I don’t think I need to remind anyone of the epic failure of FEMA during hurricane Katrina.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement? I can tell you from personal experience that crossing the border in to Canada, you’re treated like a human being by the Canadian customs agents. Coming back across to the U.S. and my experience with U.S. customs agents, on the other hand, is deplorable to say the least. We still have illegals being packed in trucks being smuggled across the border, but I’m the one who is harassed? Have our border entry points become any more secure? No. Absolutely not.
Transportation Security Administration? Because taking off your shoes, taking off your belt, walking through naked body scanners, and taking away grandma’s bread knife keeps us secure. Otherwise, the terrorists win. Sure. This is nothing more than an abusive security theater that does nothing to improve the safety of passengers.
United States Coast Guard? Despite many attempts to request upgrades to their ships, the U.S. Coast Guard is still using some of the oldest naval ships in the WORLD.
National Protection and Programs Directorate? They appear to only be an administrative part of the Department of Homeland Security that work on all of the bureaucratic requirements and administrative necessities…created by the Department of Homeland Security.
United States Secret Service? Honestly, I can’t answer whether or not they have had any failures or successes. What they do is secret.
